Driver ProfileIn 2004 Tyler began his racing career at the age of 7 with the Northwest Ohio Quarter Midget Racing Association. Tyler started in the novice division advancing to the Junior Honda division after only 4 races. With 2 feature wins Tyler was invited to compete in the 2004 Ft. Wayne Rumble Invitational in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. In 2005 Tyler competed in the Senior Honda and Light 160 divisions. Finishing 5th in the Senior Honda point standings and 3rd in the Light 160 division. Tyler competed in Toledo, OH, Zenia, OH, Lansing, MI, Waterford, MI. and ran in the Gasoline Alley Nationals at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Tyler was again invited to compete in the Ft. Wayne Rumble Invitational. He was the proud receipient of the Upside Down Award. 2006 brought about a new challenge for Tyler as he competed in a new division of quarter midgets. The World Formula division runs a 200cc engine and is currently the fastest class ran on a weekly basis. With 7 feature wins and the track qualifying record, Tyler finished 2nd in the 2006 championship point standings in the World Formula division and 5th in the Light 160 division. Tyler received the 2006 Most Improved Driver Award. At the Gasoline Alley Nationals, Tyler finished 7th while competing against drivers from Australia, Canada, and 19 different states. At the Ft. Wayne Rumble Invitational, Tyler finished consecutively in the top 5. Tyler also competed in various dirt events finishing runner-up two out of three races. In 2007 Tyler competed at the Northwest Ohio Quarter Midget Racing Association track in Maumee, OH accumulating several feature wins. Some of the 2007 highlights included winning the Willie Mageral Memorial Heavy 160 class, 44 lap special race event. Winning the Heavy 160 championship at the NWOQMRA track. Finishing 3rd in the point standings in the World Formula Class. Tyler again competed at the Gasoline Alley Nationals experiencing mechanical problems in the qualifying events, Tyler had to compete in the lower mains to qualify for the feature. Advancing through the D and C main events in the Heavy 160, Tyler came up one position short in the B main to advance. The same was true for the World Formula race. Advancing into the B main, Tyler again came up one position short of advancing to the A feature. At the Great Lakes Speedway driving a World Formula powered Quarter Midget on dirt, Tyler won 5 of the 7 events he competed in. He earned 2nd place in the point standings. To qualify for the championship you needed to compete in a minimum of 8 events and Tyler only ran 7 events. Competing in the Tri-City series, Tyler finished 4th in the Heavy 160 division and 6th in the World Formula division. Toward the end of the season Gunn Racing purchased a micro-sprint car. It is a larger car powered by a Honda 600cc, 4 cylinder engine which runs on methanol fuel. Tyler and the team (Dave and Mary Kay Gunn and Brian Smitley) traveled to Evergreen Auto Park to get some much needed seat time. After a couple hot lap sessions, Tyler was adapting quickly to the new ride and led most of the heat race. In the feature Tyler took the lead early and never looked back, taking the checkered flag in his first ever Micro 600 race. The following Friday night, Tyler competed at Stateline Raceway finishing a respectable 4th place in the feature race. 2008 WOW... What a growing year. Tyler learned a lot about racing Micro-Sprints. He raced at Jackson Speedway in Jackson, MI. Tyler finished 2nd in the point standings with one feature win, several heat wins, six 2nd place finishes and won the only dash for cash race. Tyler competed in the Kendallville Klassic at the Kendallville, IN fairgrounds finishing 4th. Tyler also competed in several races at the Miami County Speedway racing in the top ten. One of the highlights of the year was winning week 21 in the RacingJunk.com Give Back To The Racers Sweepstakes. Tyler won a Snap-On 3/8 portable impact wrench. We are looking forward to next year with some new equipment to showcase Tyler's talent. In 2009 Tyler competed at Miami County Speedway (MCS), We had decided on MCS because of the competition level, Tyler competed against 17-27 cars each week,That would be the largest restrictor field in the midwest if not ,in the country it was a great experience for him racing wheel to wheel, He finished in the top ten every week and he had 5 second place finishes, more than anyone at MCS. We all made a lot of new friends especially Tyler. We really had hopes of racing for the championship but at MCS they do not allow throw outs meaning you want to compete each week for points, Tyler was leading the points when he missed a race do to a family function, by not scoring any points Tyler dropped in the point standings, he finished 4th 140 points behind. A typical race for tyler was 120-140 points. In late july we as always started thinking about next year so when we didn't have a race at MCS one weekend we decided to go to Jackson speedway and sign him up in the open class 14yrs and up. Tyler did amazingly well he qualified 5th and finished 3rd in the race. That was pretty neat. We went back for the last race of the year and they announced that they were going to run a non wing open race at the end of the night, Well Tyler asked and I said ok, then well panic set in, This was only his second non restrictor race then I am letting him run it non wing, he had never done it before oh boy! Well all turned out well he qualified 6th and finished 6th in the wing class then we scrambled and got the car ready for non wing they started him last 19th I thought ok keep him out of trouble, Well I then learned again his passion for racing he drove that car through the field he was looking at 3rd place when the caution came out, Tyler lined up 5th when the green flew Tyler drove into turn one only to get ran over from behind, he spun out and had to restart at the tail of the field he was able to finish 9th, What excitement after that he new that in 2010 he wanted to race non wing. We then prepared the car to go to Tulsa Oklahoma the Tulsa Shootout. This is a race where the best of the best come to compete not for the money but for that Golden Driller trophy. It was a big learning experience for us, Tyler had to compete in the A-class (stock unrestricted engines) Our engine was fuel injected so we were unable to compete in the restricted class according to there rules, We did have a good time, we learned a lot, we got to see every chassis that is out there (we had plans on buying a newer car and bring it back with us) Tyler was able to move up in his races just not enough to make the feature, he finished 7th in the #2B-main and they only transferred the top 2 but we really didn't have anything for them, Tyler was one of the youngest drivers in the field. The next time we go we will know what we are doing. LOL 2010 a new season and 2 cars Well we did it we bought another car an 07 eagle wide body, This will be our winged car and the bailey our non wing car, we swapped engines put the 03 engine in the non wing car and the 06 engine in the winged car. Lets go racing boys! July 27-2010 Tyler has been racing mostly at Jackson Speedway this year, because of the early wet weather and storms we have not been making the trip to Miami County Speedway. Tyler has been racing in the sportsman Division which is a non-wing car unrestricted but with carburetors and no in cockpit adjustments, Tyler has 4 feature wins so far this year, he also won the shoot out for cash race. We have not been so fortunate in the wing car, it has been a struggle to say the least, Tyler had been qualifying back in the pack 15-16 mostly but has made the feature every week (Jackson only starts 15 cars in the feature) His finishes have been 8th and 9th. Until we decided on racing Miami County on the 4 of july weekend. That was another learning weekend, after not making the features on the 3rd I started looking at my setup for the wing car I found some new adjustments, Tyler was able to win the B-main race in the wing car and he made the feature in both cars we left MCS with a lot more confidence in the wing car. The following week at Jackson we qualified 4th, won our heat race and finished 5th. The next weekend at Jackson we just had that bad luck thing going on, Tyler was starting 6th in the feature when a car on the inside of him had a throttle stick and he ran him over, Tyler limped the car around the track to finish 9th, That set us up for the Kendallville Classic at Kendallville Indiana, I decided to run the Eagle both wing and non-wing for the race, we need more track time to figure this car out. Tyler got torn up in the wing heat, broken shock, very bent wheel. Our top notch 2nd to none race team fixed the car and he finished an impressive 2nd in the non wing car. To make a long story shorter Tyler just started and parked in the wing race to keep the car in one piece because he was to start in the front for the non wing race (and also because I have no spare parts for the Eagle) Well for the first time driving his 07 eagle chassis non wing he did an excellent job finishing 3rd. There will be more to come as the season goes into the 2nd half. GO 68g! When Tyler is not in school or racing, he enjoys spending time working with his Dad in the shop, four-wheeling, paintball, playing football, basketball and soccer. |
